Tonhain Recording Studio
Project Description
With Tonhain, Berlin has gained an exceptional venue that combines professional music production, chamber music performances, and experimental event formats under one roof. Once home to the historic Thorwaldsen-Lichtspiele cinema and later used as a sacred space, the building has been transformed into a state-of-the-art recording studio with a concert hall accommodating up to 99 guests. The result is a venue that meets the highest acoustic standards for professional audio recording while providing the intimate atmosphere of a chamber music hall. A defining architectural feature is the striking acoustic ceiling with its organic geometry. A recessed "lake," framed by two raised "mountains," forms not only the acoustic centrepiece of the studio but also its visual identity. From the outset, lighting, architecture, and acoustics were conceived as an inseparable whole.

The Challenge
Das Beleuchtungskonzept von Studio De Schutter setzt auf maximale Flexibilität bei minimaler visueller Präsenz. Motoriesierte ROBORADAR Leuchen wurden präzise in die Architektur integriert und ermöglichen unterschiedlichste Beleuchtungsszenarien, ohne den Raum mit klassischer Bühnentechnik zu überladen. Die Beleuchtung folgt konsequent der organischen Form der Akustikdecke. Indirekte Lichtlinien betonen deren fließende Geometrie und verleihen dem Raum eine visuelle Identität. Gleichzeitig setzen präzise gerichtete Lichtpunkte Musiker und Instrumente gezielt in Szene und schaffen optimale Bedingungen sowohl für Konzertaufführungen als auch für hochwertige Audio- und Videoaufnahmen im nahtlosen Wechsel. Licht wird dabei nicht als zusätzliches Gestaltungselement verstanden, sondern als integraler Bestandteil der die Architektur visuell ergänzt. Auch Nachhaltigkeit spielte bei der Planung eine wesentliche Rolle. Energieeffiziente Lichttechnik, austauschbare Komponenten und die hohe Flexibilität des Systems ermöglichen eine langfristige Nutzung ohne bauliche Anpassungen. Das Ergebnis ist ein Lichtkonzept, das weit über die funktionale Beleuchtung eines Tonstudios hinausgeht. Durch die enge Verzahnung von Architektur, Akustik und Licht entsteht ein unverwechselbarer Raum mit hoher gestalterischer Qualität, der Musik nicht nur hörbar, sondern auch erlebbar macht.

The Solution
Studio De Schutter's lighting concept is based on maximum flexibility with minimal visual presence. Motorised ROBORADAR recessed luminaires from ON were carefully integrated into the architecture, enabling a wide variety of lighting scenarios without the need for conventional stage lighting equipment. Their motorised aiming capability allows lighting accents to be adjusted effortlessly for changing stage layouts and performance settings. The lighting follows the flowing geometry of the acoustic ceiling, with indirect light lines emphasising its sculptural form and giving the space a distinctive visual identity. At the same time, precisely directed beams highlight musicians and instruments, creating ideal conditions for both live performances and high-quality audio and video recordings. Rather than acting as an additional design feature, the lighting becomes an integral part of the architecture, reinforcing the spatial concept and enhancing the room's atmosphere. Sustainability was also a key consideration throughout the project. Energy-efficient lighting technology, replaceable components, and the system's exceptional flexibility ensure long-term usability without requiring structural alterations. The result is a lighting concept that goes far beyond the functional requirements of a recording studio. Through the close integration of architecture, acoustics, and lighting, Tonhain offers a distinctive spatial experience where music is not only heard but also visually experienced.
